Natural slate and clay
Natural slate and clay tile are the longest-lived roofs there are — a century is realistic. They are also heavy, which can require structural reinforcement, and they are brittle: a falling branch or a foot in the wrong place cracks a tile. Replacement matching on an old slate roof is its own skill.
Synthetic (DaVinci) shake and slate
DaVinci composite tiles are molded from engineered polymer to replicate cedar shake or natural slate, down to the color variation. They are a fraction of the weight of the real thing, carry a Class A fire rating and Class 4 impact rating, and do not split, rot, or absorb water. For most homes that want the slate-or-shake look, synthetic is the better engineering answer.
- Class A fire, Class 4 impact — top ratings in both categories
- Far lighter than natural slate/tile — usually no structural reinforcement
- Will not rot, curl, or absorb water like real cedar
- Color is molded through, so chips do not show raw material
When a premium roof pays off
A premium roof makes sense when the home's architecture demands it, when the neighborhood comp values it, or when a homeowner plans to stay and wants to roof once. On a storm claim, if your existing roof was slate or shake, the carrier should pay to replace in-kind — we document the original material so the scope reflects it rather than defaulting to asphalt.
Common questions
Is synthetic slate as good as real slate?
For most homes it is the better choice — it gets the look with Class 4 impact resistance, a fraction of the weight, and none of the brittleness or water absorption of natural slate. Natural slate still wins on absolute lifespan.
Will my roof structure support slate or tile?
Natural slate and clay are heavy and may need structural reinforcement. Synthetic (DaVinci) is light enough that most existing structures handle it without modification — we confirm during the inspection.
Does insurance cover premium roofing?
If your existing roof was slate, shake, or tile, a storm claim should pay to replace it in-kind. We document the original material so the carrier scope is not downgraded to asphalt.
