From least to most storm-resilient
Standard vinyl is the most vulnerable: cold makes it brittle, hail cracks it, and wind can pull whole panels off a wall. Insulated vinyl is a real step up — the foam backing absorbs impact and stiffens the panel against wind. Engineered wood (LP SmartSide) and fiber cement (James Hardie) are the most resilient, each carrying strong impact ratings.
- Standard vinyl — most vulnerable; cracks in cold, detaches in wind
- Insulated vinyl — foam backing absorbs impact, stiffens against wind
- Engineered wood (LP SmartSide) — flexes, dents rather than shatters
- Fiber cement (Hardie) — rigid and tough, can chip on hard impact
What an adjuster counts as damage
The argument on a siding claim is usually functional-vs-cosmetic. A hail dimple that breaks the panel's integrity or the paint seal is functional damage; a scuff is not. The matching question matters too — if hail hit one elevation and the panel is discontinued, the carrier may owe for more than the damaged wall so the home is not left two-tone.
This is where documentation wins or loses the claim. We photograph to the carrier's gauge, identify the panel line for matching, and write the scope to include the trim, J-channel, and soffit that a first estimate routinely leaves out.
Common questions
Is vinyl siding worth replacing with something tougher?
If your home takes regular storms, yes. Insulated vinyl, engineered wood, or fiber cement all resist hail and wind far better than standard vinyl, which becomes brittle in cold and detaches in high wind.
How do I know if my siding has storm damage?
Look for dimpling, cracks, holes, or panels that have pulled loose. A lot of hail damage to siding is subtle — we inspect and photograph it to the adjuster's gauge so you know whether it is claimable.
What is 'matching' on a siding claim?
If hail damages one elevation and your siding line is discontinued, the carrier may owe to replace more than the damaged wall so the home is not left two-tone. We identify the panel line and document the matching issue.
